Of
my 31 years in sales and marketing, 15 were spent working for
a prominent printing and publishing company based in Durban, South
Africa. With the uncertainty of a stable future in a large corporate
organisation where many mergers were taking place, I decided to
become captain of my own ship! I at first felt unsure of myself
but soon came to realise that I was perfectly positioned to handle
the complicated ins and outs of the publishing world.
With each production comes a feeling of satisfaction, accomplishment and … yes, relief! When a publication finally has been ‘put to bed’, after innumerable communications with advertising clients and all the people involved in the production, I have often stood back from it and looked and assessed … and wondered ‘Why am I doing this?’ The answer, quite simply, is that I love it! I love the challenge of getting all the various aspects together, of making it happen, of seeing a polished publication of exceptionally high quality produced for easy use and readability.
The success of these publications is due not just to my efforts as publisher and coordinator, but to the contributions of a number of vital people—most especially that of the editor, Fitz Townsend from CopyWrite.
I am tremendously proud of making a meaningful contribution to the provision of helpful information—there simply are no other products quite like these available out there. I believe in what I do and I believe in the purpose of such publications—that of providing an overview of each region in South Africa that possesses such potential and is so desperately needing investment. As each publication becomes known through the many distribution avenues pursued, so does the effect on potential investors increase, and advertising companies and key organisations are more and more aware of how much these products benefit them. These are the rewards in a process that at times can be very painful!
